Charles Barkley Questions Paul George’s Suspension Justification
The NBA icon scrutinized the league's handling of the case, especially in light of the explanation related to mental health treatment.
Barkley’s remarks ignited further discussion, with other analysts also expressing uncertainty about the application of league policies.
Barkley voiced his concerns during a televised discussion, with the segment later appearing on ESPN NBA’s X account.

“Something seems off here. I take mental health seriously. But if you're using something for mental health, there should be an exception in the NBA. If it doesn’t make sense to me, it’s because I like Paul George,” Barkley stated.
He continued: “The NBA, along with DeMar DeRozan and Kevin Love, who have been vocal about mental health, should consider exceptions if you're taking something for mental health, even if it’s on the banned list.”
Barkley clarified that his doubts were not aimed at George personally but were focused on whether league rules adequately address mental health treatment.
Kenny Smith Points Out a Contradiction in NBA Policy
Kenny Smith shared Barkley’s confusion, describing the issue as a logical inconsistency.
“If this is truly what occurred, isn’t it an oxymoron? Like a contradiction in terms. You have mental health, and yet you can’t take medicine for it,” Smith remarked.
He added: “That’s why it’s puzzling to me. I’m not sure what medication he was on, but it’s a contradiction in terms.”
Smith’s comments highlighted that the suspension raises broader issues beyond a single player. Both analysts emphasized the need to safeguard mental health while upholding league standards.
The discussion has increased scrutiny on how the NBA reconciles its anti-drug policy with player wellbeing. For many, the case has become a pivotal point in an ongoing conversation the league can no longer ignore.
