Tyrese Gibson was taken into custody at a Georgia jail early Friday, a week after he did not surrender following an arrest warrant for animal cruelty, according to police.
Gibson was released that same day on a $20,000 bond, as stated by Fulton County Police Captain Nicole Dwyer. He has yet to hand over his four Cane Corso dogs to the police, who claim the dogs killed a neighbor’s small dog in mid-September and have been seen wandering the neighborhood unsupervised over the past few months.
“We are pleased he chose to do the right thing and turned himself in,” Dwyer wrote to The Associated Press, pointing out that the four dogs are still missing.
Gibson’s attorney, Gabe Banks, informed the AP on Friday that his legal team arranged a consent bond, meaning the bond terms were established before he voluntarily surrendered. Banks stated Gibson “has fully cooperated with legal authorities and will continue to do so until this matter is resolved.”
A search warrant for the “Fast & Furious” actor’s property was issued alongside the arrest warrant days after the September 18 incident, when the dogs attacked a small spaniel owned by a neighbor about half a mile from Gibson’s home. The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital but did not survive, according to Dwyer.
The dogs were captured on camera minutes later at the neighboring house, where the owner called police, reporting she couldn’t access her car due to the animals. Animal control officers arrived and managed to hold the dogs back while the neighbor reached her vehicle.
Gibson initially informed police he would surrender his dogs on September 22, but when officers arrived, he requested a few more days, as per a police press release.
Gibson shared a video on Instagram featuring various clips of his dogs early Monday and reposted it the next day with a statement from himself and his attorney. Banks wrote that Gibson had dealt with stalkers for years, and “his sole motivation for bringing these dogs into his life was to protect his family and ensure peace of mind.”
Banks added that the dogs weren’t “trained to be aggressive,” and “had never harmed a child, a person, or another dog. This tragic event is shocking and traumatizing for him and his family — and he can only imagine how devastating it has been for the family who lost their pet.”
“I never imagined waking up to this nightmare, and I know the family must feel the same way. To them, please know that my heart is broken for you,” Gibson expressed in the statement. “I am praying for your healing and for your beloved pet, who never deserved this. I remain committed to addressing this matter with honesty, responsibility, and compassion.”
